Our about
Founders

SpirulinaNord is founded by two researchers – Dr.sc.ing. Agnese and Dr.sc.ing. Kristīne and more than 10 years of experience in innovative solution design.
Kristīne has experience in biotech, biomethane processes. Agnese has experience in various chemical engineering tasks and the organisation of events.
With our third co-founder Kaspar’s business experience we have developed a start-up for growing Spirulina in Latvia.

OUR STORY
We believe that fresh and healthy food is the main source of energy, focus, good sleep and overall wellbeing of our body!
SUSTAINABILITY
At SpirulinaNord, we’re committed to a zero-waste approach.
Spirulina offers a unique advantage in that it can be consumed entirely, with no inedible parts like husks or stems. Our innovative “aquariums” are designed to be space-efficient, fitting into urban environments such as skyscrapers or city centers, minimizing land use while maximizing productivity. With spirulina doubling its volume every three days, our continuous harvests ensure a steady supply throughout the year, leaving more natural space untouched for leisure.
Fresh consumption is key, as thermal processing isn’t necessary, preserving the maximum nutritional value and minimizing resource consumption. Ecologically sound, our closed cultivation system eliminates the need for chemical protectants, mitigating threats from insects, birds, or harmful algae, common in open-pond systems.
Our process ensures cleanliness and safety, utilizing only purified air and water, free from contamination by environmental factors like air, rain, or sandstorms.
Additionally, spirulina’s growth actively contributes to fresher air by consuming CO2 and releasing O2, while also requiring significantly fewer resources compared to traditional agriculture, such as 90% less water and land than livestock farming, and 80% less than soybean cultivation.
URBAN FARMING TECHNOLOGY
99% of spirulina is produced in shallow ponds (~30cm deep, hundreds of ha large). We have developed a new and unique approach to cultivating spirulina – a technology that is:
20x cheaper than similar indoor glass tube PBR
5x less land space needed, additionally, a multi-floor building can multiply this several times. 10m3 of PRB needs 20m2 of land incl. a harvesting path.
3x less energy needed due to innovative lighting solution
3x less water and minerals needed than in an open pond system
2-3x higher yield of the day because the systemis independent of climate, weather, and daylight length (optimal illumination for 16 h instead of 12h and overexposure in midday)
2x longer season – non-stop production 12 months a year.
PREMIUM quality – Closed system for contamination prevention.
Excellent system for urban areas or complicated relief spots as land in the EU is expensive and EU citizens expect the lower impact on ecology and higher traceability of production. This system offers locally produced spirulina with low environmental impact and high nutrition value. Each produced ton of spirulina captures 0.7 t of CO2 and serves as an oxygen production site. That is especially important for crowded cities with a low green area ratio.
We grow in the North, closer to you, to ensure a fresher product and less transportation caused pollution in the world.
